Nigeria Strengthens Ties with Israel as New Ambassador Presents Credentials

In a significant diplomatic move, Ambassador Nkechi Ufochukwu has formally taken up her post as Nigeria's representative to Israel. This follows the presentation of her Letters of Credence to Israeli President Isaac Herzog in a ceremony held in Jerusalem. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this development in a statement, highlighting that the event marked the official commencement of Ambassador Ufochukwu's tenure and underscored Nigeria's commitment to bolstering its long-standing relationship with Israel. According to reports, Ambassador Ufochukwu conveyed the goodwill of President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian people to the Israeli government and its citizens. She expressed her eagerness to deepen the ties between the two nations during her ambassadorial term, focusing on areas such as trade and investment, agricultural development, technological innovation, defense and security, healthcare, and cultural exchanges. President Herzog, in response, indicated Israel's readiness to collaborate closely with Nigeria, particularly in innovation and counter-terrorism efforts. Ambassador Ufochukwu is one of the 65 ambassadors-designate whose appointments were approved by President Tinubu on March 6, 2026, after they were confirmed by the Senate in December 2025. The group consists of 34 career diplomats and 31 political ambassadors. The presentation of her credentials is a pivotal step in enhancing the diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Israel, paving the way for potential cooperation in various sectors.
