US Introduces $20,000 Visa Security Deposit for Nigerians and Other Africans

The United States government has put in place a new policy that requires Nigerians and other African nationals applying for business or tourist visas to pay a security deposit of up to $20,000. This move is aimed at ensuring that visitors depart the country at the end of their authorized stay. The policy, which takes effect on August 3, 2026, is a result of the rising number of visa overstays and inadequate information sharing by several countries on the continent. According to the US Department of State, the new rule is designed to address the issue of hundreds of thousands of non-immigrant visitors who remain in the US beyond their authorized period. The policy targets applicants from countries with high overstay rates, poor information sharing, and insufficient identity verification. The US Mission in Nigeria has also cautioned Nigerians against using artificial intelligence (AI) edited passport photos for visa applications, stating that such images will not be accepted. The mission emphasized that passport photos must be genuine, recent, and accurately reflect the applicant's current appearance. The new policy is a follow-up to the pilot phase that began in August 2025, which required applicants from 50 countries to deposit up to $15,000. The results of the pilot phase showed a significant drop in overstays, with fewer than 50 cases recorded in the first 10 months. However, the bond requirement also led to a sharp decline in visa applications, with an 83% decrease in visa issuance for pilot countries between August 2025 and July 2026. The US Department of State noted that the policy is not punitive but rather a tool to encourage foreign governments to improve data sharing and document security. Consular officers will determine the bond amount for each applicant based on individual circumstances, with options of $10,000, $15,000, and $20,000.
