A devastating outcome has emerged from the recent mass migration incident in Spain's Ceuta enclave, with local authorities confirming that at least 72 lives were lost. This tragic event occurred when a large number of migrants, estimated to be around 60,000, attempted to cross the border from Morocco into the Spanish territory. According to Miguel Angel Perez Triano, the government's delegate to Ceuta, 'The latest figure that we have is 72,' in reference to the number of fatalities. This update surpasses the previous toll of 67 deaths. The situation has largely returned to normal, with Spanish police and troops maintaining a visible presence in the streets of Ceuta. Most of the migrants who crossed into the enclave have voluntarily returned to Morocco within a 48-hour period. The international community, including European partners, has criticized Spain's handling of the immigration crisis. Reports indicate that Spanish soldiers have been detaining and escorting migrants back to the border, while rescue units have been scouring the waters for any remaining migrants. The Spanish government has attributed the mass migration attempt to the spread of false information by criminal gangs regarding a recent Spanish Supreme Court ruling on immigration. The ruling was allegedly misrepresented as allowing for easier passage into Spain, prompting the large-scale migration attempt.
