Ukraine Under Siege as Russia Unleashes Barrage of Ballistic Missiles

A devastating wave of ballistic missile and drone strikes has been launched by Russia against various Ukrainian cities, resulting in the loss of at least eight lives and injuring dozens of people, according to officials. The northeastern city of Kharkiv bore the brunt of the attack, with four fatalities, while the capital city of Kyiv witnessed the death of an elderly woman. Additionally, two people lost their lives in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia and one in the northeastern city of Sumy. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the raid on Kyiv as 'one of the most massive ballistic attacks' since the commencement of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. In a separate incident, Ukraine's navy reported that five people were killed when a Turkish-owned civilian cargo ship carrying grain was struck by Russian missiles in the Black Sea. Russia has thus far declined to comment on the matter. Meanwhile, Ukraine claimed to have successfully targeted three Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea and three oil depots in the southern region of Stavropol. President Zelensky emphasized that these targets were instrumental in financing Russian aggression. Several areas in the Kyiv region were hit overnight, with the Ukrainian military successfully shooting down 18 out of 41 missiles and intercepting 108 drones. The head of the Kharkiv region, Oleh Syniehubov, stated that a postal terminal in the city's suburbs was attacked, resulting in the deaths of four men aged between 24 and 62. Several of the injured are in critical condition. In a message on Telegram, President Zelensky noted that Russia had deployed approximately 1,450 strike drones, over 1,640 guided bombs, and 99 missiles of various types against Ukraine in the past week. Zelensky also posted about Ukrainian strikes on Telegram, stating that the security service units had hit three oil depots in the Stavropol region and that units of the Armed Forces had struck another fuel-sector facility in the same region. He added that precise hits were recorded on three Russian 'shadow fleet' tankers in the Black Sea. The Caspian Pipeline Consortium, which transports Kazakhstan's Caspian oil to Russia's Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, reported that its terminal had been hit, resulting in the damage of two tankers and the suspension of oil loading operations. Fortunately, there were no injuries or oil spills. The governor of Stavropol stated that a drone attack had caused a fire in an industrial park. The latest strikes on Kyiv involved a range of Russian weapons systems, including Iskander and hypersonic Zircon missiles, as well as 125 drones, according to the Ukrainian air force. On Sunday, Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko reported that both residential and non-residential buildings had been damaged, including a supermarket and a dormitory. Firefighters are currently battling blazes at two warehouses. Ukraine's emergencies ministry stated that a logistics hub in the Bucha district near Kyiv had been hit, resulting in the injury of two people. The overnight strikes followed Ukraine's deployment of drones to destroy two warehouses belonging to Russia's largest online retailer, Wildberries, resulting in the deaths of eight people and causing significant fires. Seven deaths and 25 injuries occurred at a facility in the city of Tambov, approximately 295 miles southeast of Moscow. One death and 37 injuries occurred at another Wildberries warehouse in Elektrostal near the capital. On Saturday, President Zelensky stated that Ukraine's operations were in response to 'Russian strikes on our civilian infrastructure and on our cities and communities.' Wildberries is often compared to the Russian equivalent of Amazon. The RWB group, which combines Wildberries with the advertising company Russ, was valued at approximately $12.6 billion by Forbes Russia in 2026. Ukraine has recently intensified its long-range drone attacks on Russia's critical energy infrastructure, causing widespread fuel shortages. Earlier this month, Kyiv reported that nearly 43% of Russia's oil refining capacity had been 'disabled' as a result. Although the BBC has not independently verified this figure, Ukraine maintains that Russian oil and gas facilities are legitimate targets, as Moscow relies heavily on fossil fuel exports to finance its full-scale invasion, which began in February 2022. However, Russia has also escalated its attacks on Ukrainian cities, prompting Kyiv to seek increased supplies of ballistic missile interceptors from its European allies. 'Protection against ballistic missiles is our constant and top priority right now,' President Zelensky stated on Sunday. 'Interceptors are needed every day.'
