Edo State Approves 100MW Power Project, Eyeing 2026 Completion

The Edo State administration has officially granted transmission and distribution licences to CCETC Ogua Energy Limited, expressing strong belief that its 100-megawatt power project in the Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area will reach completion before the end of this year.

This development was announced by the State Commissioner for Power, Paul Usenbo, who released a statement to journalists in Benin City on Saturday. Commissioner Usenbo confirmed that CCETC Ogua Energy Limited has now received the official licence certificate for electricity transmission.

According to Usenbo, the 100MW power facility successfully navigated crucial prerequisites and adhered to timelines for its initial phase, which wrapped up in July 2026. He further noted that various government agencies have consistently offered technical advice and regulatory assistance, ensuring the project developers meet all necessary standards, evaluations, and other statutory requirements.

Following the successful conclusion of the first stage, focus has now moved to the second and ultimate phase, which is anticipated to culminate in the project's inauguration. Usenbo articulated the state’s expectation, stating: “The expectation is that CCETC Ogua Energy Limited will complete the remaining phase of the 100-megawatt power project in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area and proceed to commissioning by the end of 2026.” He reiterated that the state government’s issuance of transmission and distribution licences to the firm underscores its confidence in a 2026 completion.

The Commissioner further revealed that a significant portion of the project's major milestones is projected to be met by October 2026, assuming no unexpected hurdles or regulatory delays emerge. Nevertheless, he offered reassurance to the developers, indicating that the state government would contemplate extending the schedule if substantial difficulties impede the completion. Usenbo was quoted saying, “If there are any challenges faced by this project, I will give an extension of time,” noting that the completion deadline could potentially be shifted to the first quarter of 2027 if circumstances demand.

Despite the allowance for a potential extension, the commissioner conveyed the government's continued optimism regarding the project's advancement. He highlighted the significant progress already visible at the site and the continuous delivery and setup of power-generation machinery. Usenbo conveyed his certainty that the generating units currently being brought to the project location would be fully installed and commissioned according to the anticipated timeline.
