TCN Clarifies Lekki Outage, Points to Eko Disco Feeders

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has squarely attributed the recent power disruption at the Lekki Transmission Substation to issues originating from the Eko Electricity Distribution Company's (EKEDP) feeders. This clarification, released in a statement by TCN management on Thursday, aims to correct what it termed as inaccurate information previously disseminated by EKEDP regarding the incident.

According to TCN, the Oniru 33kV and Agungi 33kV feeders, both operated by EKEDP, simultaneously tripped around 4:34 a.m. on August 26, 2026. This trip was a direct consequence of an overcurrent and earth fault within the feeders. The resulting fault subsequently triggered the inter-tripping of the primary and secondary breakers of TCN's TR1 60MVA 132/33kV transformer, accompanied by a loud bang and visible smoke.

Refuting EKEDP's earlier assertion, TCN stated, "Contrary to EKEDP’s claim that TCN’s T11 transformer tripped unexpectedly and was awaiting inspection, the actual incident involved the simultaneous tripping of EKEDP’s Oniru 33kV and Agungi 33kV feeders at 04:34am on 26th August, 2026, due to overcurrent and earth fault." TCN's maintenance personnel promptly responded to the situation, carrying out repairs on the damaged secondary breaker and restoring both the primary and secondary breakers later that same day.

However, the problem resurfaced when EKEDP attempted to re-energize its Oniru feeder. TCN explained that "Upon EKEDP’s trial closure of its Oniru feeder, the same relay indications caused another trip, necessitating further corrective work." The transmission company categorically denied any outage on its T11 transformer, as claimed by EKEDP, emphasizing that "No outage occurred on TCN’s T11 transformer as claimed by EKEDP." It further clarified that "the incident was strictly related to EKEDP’s Oniru 33kV and Agungi 33kV feeders."

TCN assured the public that its technical team remains on-site, working tirelessly to restore power to all affected customers without delay. "TCN’s technical team has been on-site, working assiduously to restore supply within the shortest possible time," the statement affirmed.

Earlier, EKEDP had reported that the TCN unit was out of service due to an unexpected system trip, leading to power interruptions along the Oniru 33kV feeder line, and had indicated that power had been rerouted and backed up where feasible.

TCN extended its apologies to affected electricity customers for the inconvenience, stating, "TCN assures electricity customers impacted by the incident that we are actively addressing the fault caused by the DisCo’s feeders and regrets any inconvenience caused." The company concluded by reiterating its dedication to fortifying the nation's transmission infrastructure, asserting, "We are committed to working assiduously to put in place a more robust transmission network."
