Lagos Delivers Food, Cash Aid to Vulnerable Households

The Lagos State administration has characterized its recent initiative, involving the distribution of rice and financial assistance to financially insecure families, as a continuous social welfare strategy. This programme aims to alleviate the economic pressures faced by low-income individuals throughout the state. Mrs. Olayinka Ojo, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, revealed in a statement released to Sunday PUNCH that the state government operates numerous other social support schemes designed to assist citizens, executed by various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies. Ojo appealed to the populace, stating, “I urge residents to continue to trust the government whenever there are calls for data collection, as this enables their inclusion in the Lagos State Social Register, which serves as the basis for identifying eligible beneficiaries.”
More than 1,500 individuals statewide were chosen for this intervention, as per the official communication. This effort was jointly managed by the Lagos State Operations Coordinating Unit of the Social Protection Coordinating Department, under the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, working alongside the Ministry of Agriculture. The distribution event, which took place in Alausa, Ikeja, specifically focused on impoverished and vulnerable households whose details are recorded in the state's Single Social Register – a central database crucial for implementing government welfare initiatives. The initial phase of beneficiaries originated from Agege, Amuwo-Odofin, Ikeja, Kosofe, and Lagos Island Local Government Areas, with subsequent distributions planned for other LGAs progressively over the coming week.
Blessing Olanrewaju, a recipient from Kosofe Local Government Area, shared her experience, stating that she finally received aid via the Lagos State Single Social Register after being registered for a number of years. Olanrewaju expressed her relief, saying, “I was recently contacted and invited to receive assistance. I had almost lost hope, but I received a call informing me that I had been selected. Today, I am happy to receive this support.” Similarly, Mr. Shola Oyekanmi, a beneficiary from Agege Local Government Area, lauded the programme as both opportune and effective. He encouraged other citizens to engage in government registration processes to enhance their prospects of benefiting from future support schemes. Other individuals who received assistance implored the state government to maintain the programme, emphasizing the continued need for help among numerous vulnerable residents across Lagos.
