British Journalist Slams UK's Annual £136m Aid to Millionaire-Rich Nigeria

Full Story
A British media personality, Lowri Turner, has publicly urged the United Kingdom government to discontinue its financial assistance to Nigeria. In a video that has gained significant traction online, Turner, while appearing on a Channel 5 programme in the UK, raised questions regarding the proper management of aid funds directed to Nigeria.
She articulated that the £136 million allocated to nations like Nigeria often falls prey to rampant, high-level corruption, consequently failing to benefit the ordinary citizens who are genuinely in need. Turner contended that Nigeria, a country reportedly home to thousands of millionaires and losing an estimated $15 billion annually to corrupt practices, should not be a recipient of unaccounted foreign aid.
Furthermore, she highlighted the pressing domestic challenges faced by the UK, noting that hardworking British citizens are struggling with rising energy and food costs. She argued that such aid programmes to countries like Nigeria ought to be curtailed, emphasizing that the UK government's primary responsibility is to its own populace before disbursing millions abroad.
Turner stated, ‘’We currently give Nigeria £136 million a year. They have eight and a half thousand millionaires there, and they lose approximately $15 billion a year in corruption. So, we are giving money to a country that has a great number of wealthy people in it and this money will be fuelling the corruption, so I don't think we should be giving them aids. There is no doubt aid funnels corruption in certain countries. It also infantilizes them. If you ask some people in African countries, they say ‘’We don't want white saviour complex'. We want to be able to build our own economies''.
She expressed bewilderment as to why the Nigerian government continues to seek foreign aid despite its significant number of wealthy individuals. Her critical remarks have ignited widespread discussion across various online platforms.
