Iranian Authorities Carry Out Execution Over Police Officer's Death

Full Story
The Iranian judiciary announced on Sunday that an individual has been executed for the killing of a police officer, who died after being struck by a vehicle during confrontations dating back four years. This execution comes amidst an increase in capital punishments carried out by the nation since the Middle East conflict began in February, coupled with the wave of anti-government demonstrations that started late last year.
According to local prosecutor Aref Akbari, as reported by Mizan Online, the judiciary's website, "The death sentence for the killer of Reza Ehterami, a police officer serving in Iran’s police emergency unit, has been carried out." Akbari further stated that the execution proceeded following a thorough investigation and trial, with the Supreme Court ultimately confirming the verdict.
The court identified the convicted individual as “Danial”, who was found guilty of the deliberate killing of Ehterami, a third lieutenant within the law enforcement agency stationed in Bandar Abbas, a city located in the southern part of the country. State media previously reported that Ehterami’s death occurred in 2022 during violent encounters between police personnel and individuals involved in fuel smuggling activities. The defendant was reportedly driving the vehicle that ran over the officer.
Human rights organizations, notably Amnesty International, indicate that Iran executes more individuals annually than any other nation, with the sole exception of China. The Islamic Republic applies capital punishment for various offenses, including homicide. In oil-rich Iran, fuel costs are among the globe's lowest, a factor that significantly drives extensive smuggling operations into neighboring territories.
