Indiana Father Jailed 16 Years After Pet Dog Mauled One-Week-Old Son

An American father has received a 16-year prison sentence following the tragic death of his infant son, who was fatally attacked by the family's pet dog. The incident occurred in their Indiana residence, where the week-old baby, Jason Anthony Weaver, suffered at least 180 bites from Chomp, a 5-year-old husky and pit bull mix.

Reports indicate that the newborn sustained extensive injuries across his head and body, alongside severe internal trauma, including brain hemorrhages, fractured ribs, and tears in his lungs. According to the New York Post, the baby's father, mother, and four other relatives were apprehended shortly after the death in September. The family's home in rural Markle, Indiana, was described as being filled with trash and bugs.

Austin Kinsey, the father, informed police, as detailed in a WPTA report, that he was playing video games in the same room as the infant and had only left momentarily to speak with other family members. It was the baby's grandfather, Timothy Kinsey, who subsequently heard the child's cries and discovered the dog dragging the baby around the room. Emergency responders attempted CPR upon arrival, but their efforts to save the newborn were unsuccessful.

Officers at the scene observed a "strong odor of animal, trash, and dirt everywhere," noting that the house, situated approximately 25 miles southwest of Fort Wayne, was overwhelmed with insects, refuse, unwashed dishes, and soiled clothing, as documented in court papers. Investigators even found bugs on the baby's car seat. The dwelling was ultimately deemed uninhabitable and vacated. An officer's report, obtained by the Daily Mail, stated, "There was so much trash and debris, officers could barely walk through the home."

Despite family members describing Chomp as initially gentle with the infant, they also admitted the dog had a history of jealousy, aggression towards other animals, and prior instances of biting people, according to court documents. A family member even disclosed that a gun was kept in the house specifically for situations where the dog might act up. Chomp was later euthanized.

Initially, the newborn's father faced two counts of neglect and one count of harboring a non-immunized dog that caused injury. The most serious neglect charge was dropped as part of a plea agreement, leading to the 16-year prison sentence handed down on Monday. Violet Weaver, the child's mother, is scheduled for a change of plea hearing later this month. Legal proceedings are still ongoing for the grandparents, Timothy Kinsey, Rita Wickey, and Michael Wickey, as well as for the baby's uncle, Tony Kinsey, all of whom also face charges.
