Cleaner Discovers Live Newborn Discarded in Penang Airport Bin

A harrowing incident unfolded at Penang International Airport in Malaysia on August 31, where a newborn baby boy was discovered abandoned in a sanitary trash can within a public toilet. The infant, found to be alive, was brought to attention after a cleaning staff member heard persistent cries emanating from a bin in a toilet designated for individuals with disabilities. The cleaner promptly alerted the police.

Disturbing video footage captured the moment the tiny infant lay inside the refuse bin, which was lined with a blue plastic bag, as he wailed. Upon rescue by airport personnel, it was observed that the baby still had his umbilical cord attached to the placenta, which dangled as he was carefully lifted out.

Southwest District police chief Anuwal Ab Wahab confirmed the cleaner's account, stating, “Cleaning staff heard cries coming from a sanitary bin in a toilet designated for people with disabilities and called police.” Following the rescue, the newborn was immediately transported to Penang Hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. Doctors confirmed the baby was in a “generally good condition” and healthy.

Authorities initiated an investigation, reviewing CCTV footage from the airport premises. This led to the subsequent arrest of a 23-year-old woman and a 22-year-old Burmese national, who was employed as a security guard. Police Chief Wahab noted that the man was taken into custody to aid with the ongoing investigation and was also found to be without valid travel documents.

The case is currently being probed under Section 317 of the Penal Code, which addresses the abandonment of a child under the age of 12 by a parent or guardian. Conviction for such an offense carries a potential sentence of up to seven years in prison, a fine, or both. While the two individuals arrested are suspects, forensic tests are underway to definitively establish their relationship to the newborn. The police have stated that investigations remain active.
