Dedza Court Jails Woman 14 Years for Setting Brother's House Ablaze Over Bamboo

A 44-year-old woman, Catherine Silvester, has been handed a 14-year sentence with hard labour by the Dedza First Grade Magistrate's Court in Malawi. Her conviction stems from an incident where she deliberately set fire to her brother's dwelling, causing him injuries, following a disagreement over bamboo.

State Prosecutor Sergeant Martha Chingwalungwalu detailed that the conflict began when the victim harvested bamboo from Silvester's garden without seeking permission. Later on the same night, after her son had confronted the victim about the bamboo, Silvester proceeded to her brother's residence. There, she reportedly yelled at him before igniting his house with grass while he was asleep inside.

The victim sustained burn injuries from the fire and subsequently reported the matter to the Dedza Police, which led to Silvester's arrest. Dedza Police publicist Beatrice Jefita confirmed that Silvester admitted her guilt to the charge of acts intended to cause grievous harm when she appeared before the court.

During her plea for leniency, Silvester informed Magistrate Anthony Banda that she is the primary caregiver for her children and her husband, who is disabled, appealing for forgiveness and a reduced sentence. However, the State countered by emphasizing the grave nature of the offence, highlighting that it involved close blood relatives and was intentionally carried out while the victim was in a vulnerable, sleeping state.

Magistrate Banda concurred that the act was entirely preventable and stressed the necessity of a stringent sentence to deter similar future transgressions. Consequently, Silvester, who hails from Kamgulitse Village, Traditional Authority Kamenyagwaza in Dedza District, was condemned to 14 years imprisonment with hard labour.
