French Court Jails Father Six Months Over Teacher Beheading Threat

A French court has handed a father a six-month jail sentence for making threats to "cut off the head" of a female teacher at his son's school just last week. This incident carries a grim resonance, coming after the 2020 beheading of history and geography teacher Samuel Paty by an 18-year-old radical Islamist of Chechen origin, following Paty's display of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed in class.

The defendant confronted the 58-year-old teacher in the school car park in the southwestern town of Le Fauga. This confrontation occurred after his nine-year-old son had been moved to a different class due to behavioural issues. The father explicitly threatened to decapitate the teacher and subsequently entered the school building, where he reiterated these threats in the presence of the headteacher.

During a hearing held on Thursday in the city of Toulouse, the lawyer representing the defendant acknowledged the "serious nature" of the offenses committed. However, the lawyer appealed to the court to judge his French client primarily as a father, urging them not to consider his "Muslim religious beliefs."

Despite the plea, the court sentenced the defendant to six months in prison, to be served immediately and without the possibility of parole. This ruling was notably stricter than the public prosecutor's request, who had sought a six-month sentence under electronic monitoring.

Presiding judge Fabrice Rives commented that the father's threats were "extremely disturbing" and could "only refer to a current event that has, unfortunately, remained in the minds of all French people." Beyond the jail term, the father is also mandated to complete a citizenship course within six months of his release. Furthermore, he faces a three-year ban from contacting the teacher or entering the school premises.

During the proceedings, the father offered an apology, stating that he "had not realised the seriousness" of his remarks. He described himself as "very, very protective of his children" and insisted he was "not a violent person by nature."

Jocelyn Momasso-Momasso, the teacher’s lawyer, revealed that his client is "traumatised" and is currently on sick leave. The teacher expressed uncertainty about her return to the classroom, stating, "I didn’t sign up for this."
