Ohio Law Enforcement Locates 79 Missing Children, Teen Found Under Floor

A significant month-long initiative spearheaded by the U.S. Marshals Service in Ohio has successfully led to the recovery of 79 children who were reported missing and endangered across the state. Officials announced this breakthrough on September 8th, describing it as the most extensive operation of its kind in Ohio's history aimed at locating missing children.

The children, whose ages ranged from 6 to 17, were found during "Operation Meridian," an intensive effort carried out throughout August, according to details released by the U.S. Marshals Service. This agency, typically known for tracking and apprehending fugitives, collaborated with various federal, state, and local law enforcement bodies to pinpoint and retrieve these vulnerable children.

The operation specifically targeted cases where children were reported as runaways or were suspected victims of s*x trafficking, abuse, neglect, or other forms of endangerment, as outlined in a press release from the U.S. Marshals Service. U.S. Marshal Michael Black stated, "The United States Marshals Service, through its fugitive task forces, locates and arrests the most violent fugitives in our communities. Using the same resources and methods, we have the ability to seek and recover missing and endangered children."

Dozens of agencies participated in this concerted effort, including local police departments, sheriff's offices, the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development's Office of Inspector General.

Among the notable cases highlighted by authorities was the search for two sisters, aged 13 and 16, who had gone missing in separate incidents in July 2024 and April 2026, respectively. Working with the Columbus Police Department, the U.S. Marshals Service located the 13-year-old girl concealed within a basement crawlspace, situated beneath a bedroom closet floor, at a residence in Lockbourne, a community just south of Columbus, Ohio. Her elder sister was found later the same day at a Columbus restaurant. Their mother was subsequently arrested on an existing warrant for a probation violation issued through Franklin County.

In another instance, a 16-year-old girl, reported missing from Toledo, Ohio, on August 18th, was discovered after investigators pursued leads across Ohio and Michigan. The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed that this teenager had previously been identified as a victim of human trafficking. She was found at a Toledo residence and promptly transported to a hospital for medical assessment. A man discovered with her was interviewed, and local authorities are currently investigating potential criminal activities related to the case.

The U.S. Marshals Service also confirmed that law enforcement agencies worked in conjunction with child welfare organizations and social service providers to ensure all recovered children received necessary medical care, counseling, family reunification services, and other crucial support.
