FCT Police Command Rescues Two Infants, Seeks Public Aid to Find Parents

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed the rescue of two infants found abandoned in separate incidents across Abuja. In a statement released on Friday by the Command's Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, it was disclosed that the babies were discovered on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, in the Kurudu and Gwagwalada areas.

The first incident occurred in Kurudu, where a resident identified as Mr. Innocent alerted authorities after hearing a baby crying around 5:30 p.m. near Obodo Street. Upon investigation, Mr. Innocent found a baby boy carefully wrapped in a cloth and placed inside a carton box. Police officers from the Kurudu Division, supported by personnel from the Juveniles and Women Care (JWC) Department, were promptly dispatched to the scene and successfully rescued the infant. The baby was then transported to a nearby hospital for a medical check-up and is reported to be in stable condition. Following standard procedures, the child has since been transferred to the Social Welfare Department for ongoing care.

Later that same day, a second incident unfolded in Gwagwalada at approximately 9:40 p.m. Mr. Ibrahim, another concerned resident, heard a baby crying outside his gate. With assistance from other community members, Ibrahim rescued a baby girl and reported the discovery to the Gwagwalada Police Station by 10:15 p.m. The JWC Department subsequently took the infant to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for medical assessment and care. She awaits handover to the Social Welfare Development authorities.

The FCT Police Command has stated that investigations are currently underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding these abandonments and to identify the mothers or any other family members of the children. The Command is appealing to the public for any information that could help in tracing the relatives of either baby.
