Andrew Tate, Brother Face Romanian Indictment for Minor Trafficking, Money Laundering

Social media personality Andrew Tate has been formally indicted by Romanian prosecutors on serious charges including the trafficking of minors, money laundering, s£x with a minor, and witness tampering. His brother, Tristan Tate, also faces indictment for complicity in these offences, which follow an investigation initiated several years ago by the authorities.

The Tate siblings, both former kickboxing champions holding dual American and British citizenship, were apprehended in Miami this past July, subsequent to an extradition request from the United Kingdom. In Romania, they have been subjects of a criminal inquiry, particularly concerning human trafficking allegations, since December 2022. Both brothers consistently maintain their innocence against all accusations.

According to Romanian prosecutors, the strategy employed by the Tates involved enticing victims through seduction and making false promises of romantic relationships or marriage. Subsequently, these individuals were allegedly compelled to create pornographic material for an online webcam operation.

Eugen Vidineac, a Romanian legal representative for the Tate brothers, issued a statement asserting, "We will examine every aspect of (the indictment) with the same level of scrutiny and we will challenge any evidential, procedural or legal deficiencies through the appropriate judicial process." He further reiterated, "Our clients continue to reject the allegations against them."

A spokesperson for DIICOT, Romania's anti-organised crime prosecuting unit currently investigating the Tates, indicated that it is uncertain at this time if the unit will pursue their extradition from the United States. While Romanian law permits the Tates to be tried in absentia, the commencement of a trial is not imminent. The indictment will first proceed to a preliminary court chamber, where a judge is tasked with reviewing the case files to verify their legality. Although the legal framework allots 60 days for the preliminary chamber judge to conclude this report, the process typically extends beyond this timeframe.

Currently, the Tate brothers remain incarcerated in a federal prison, awaiting a judge's decision regarding their extradition to Britain, where they are sought in connection with r*pe charges.

During a Florida court appearance last week, the brothers petitioned for their release from custody, arguing it would enable them to effectively contest their extradition to the UK, where they face charges of r*pe and trafficking.

Andrew, aged 39, declared to the court that he has "never committed the crimes I'm accused of." His 38-year-old brother, Tristan, on the other hand, detailed the challenging conditions of his incarceration, describing his cell as cramped and hot, with minimal access to exercise and sunlight. He expressed to the court, "It's beginning to grate on me because I can't partake in helping with my defence." Tristan further claimed, "It's death by scurvy," mentioning a weight loss of 14lb (6.3kg) to date. He also highlighted the presence of ants and the lack of privacy for the toilet in his cell, visible to passersby.

An extradition hearing date has not yet been scheduled, and the United Kingdom has a deadline of mid-September to submit its evidence to the U.S. State Department.
