Tragedy Strikes Peru as Tourist Plane Carrying Foreigners Crashes

A devastating plane crash occurred in Peru on Saturday, resulting in the loss of 13 lives. The small plane, a Cessna 208 Caravan aircraft, was carrying foreign tourists to view the renowned Nazca Lines archaeological site. According to the transport ministry, the victims included seven Italians, two Germans, and two Spaniards, as well as two crew members. The ages of the victims ranged from 24 to 78. Police Major Jorge Andrade confirmed that there were no survivors, stating, 'We have information that 11 passengers and two crew members have died. Given the severity of the accident, there are no survivors. We have recovered four bodies so far.' The incident took place shortly after 1:00 pm (1800 GMT) near the airport in Pisco, approximately 240 kilometers (150 miles) south of the capital Lima. The plane, operated by AeroDiana, was offering sightseeing trips over the Nazca Lines, a World Heritage site featuring geoglyphs etched into the desert sands. The cause of the crash is currently unknown, but municipal officials in Vista Alegre, where the plane crashed, indicated that an 'in-flight emergency' may have been to blame. Peru's civil aviation authority and the air accident agency will conduct an investigation into the accident. President Keiko Fujimori expressed her condolences and announced that the government is considering the possible closure of the Pisco airport. The Nazca Lines, which date back to between 500 BC and 500 AD, are a popular tourist destination, with many small planes operating from the airport in Pisco to offer sightseeing trips. Unfortunately, this is not the first accident to occur in the area, as seven people were killed in a plane crash in 2022, and four British tourists and two Peruvian crew members died in a crash in 2010.
