Gambling Debt Revenge: Woman Admits to Kidnapping, Killing 5-Year-Old in South Africa

A South African woman, Sibongile Happiness Ngwadla, aged 40, has confessed to the Durban High Court that she kidnapped and murdered a five-year-old boy, Simphiwe Ntoneko Xaba. Her motive, she revealed, was to exact revenge on the child's mother, Ntombifikile Xaba, whom she blamed for introducing her to gambling, a habit that plunged her into significant debt.

Ngwadla entered a guilty plea on Tuesday, July 28, facing charges of murder, kidnapping, and attempted extortion. In her detailed plea statement presented to the court, she admitted to abducting Ntobeko on August 22, 2025. She subsequently took him to the Ezimeleni informal settlement, where her relative, Sinenhlanhla Mbotho, resided.

Using a disposable "burner" phone, Ngwadla then sent a series of text messages to Ntombifikile Xaba, falsely claiming her son had been kidnapped. She demanded an eWallet payment of R60,000 for his safe return, explaining that she needed the funds to settle her mounting online gambling debts. "I harboured resentment towards the deceased's mother, who initiated me into gambling, for not assisting me during my financial struggles, and I sought retribution," Ngwadla stated in her plea.

She further confessed that when her extortion scheme began to unravel due to an intensive search launched by police and community members for the missing child, she made the grim decision to end his life. "The police and the community were actively searching for the missing child, and his photograph was circulating widely on social media. I chose to kill the deceased to evade detection and arrest," she explained.

On August 23, Ngwadla moved Ntobeko from Mbotho’s residence to a secluded spot in Isipingo. There, she first tried to strangle him but stopped because, as she recounted, "He cried so much that I stopped." Following this, she transported the child to the Q Section of Umlazi, where she tragically threw him into a river, ensuring he drowned. "I concede that I meticulously planned and executed the killing of the child to conceal the kidnapping and extortion, thus my actions were premeditated," Ngwadla affirmed.

In an attempt to deflect suspicion after the murder, she admitted to sending a WhatsApp message to Mbotho. In the message, Ngwadla falsely claimed she had returned Ntobeko to his mother and later heard that Xaba herself had thrown the child into the river. However, this deceptive manoeuvre failed, leading to Ngwadla's arrest on August 27.

During the reading of her plea statement by her Legal Aid attorney, Zeera Fareed, Ngwadla became visibly distressed and wept. After the court accepted her guilty plea and convicted her, she opted to testify in mitigation of her sentence. "I sincerely apologise to the family for the immense pain I have inflicted. I am truly remorseful," she conveyed to the court, expressing hope that her sentence would reflect her genuine regret. She also wished to offer an apology to her own five children. Prior to her arrest, Ngwadla stated she worked as a self-employed hairdresser on Broad Street, Durban.

Outside the courtroom, Ntombifikile Xaba vehemently denied Ngwadla’s assertion that she introduced her to gambling. Xaba clarified that they were neighbours in Umlazi and Ngwadla frequently borrowed her phone to engage in online gambling, which was the extent of their acquaintance. She added that by the time her son was kidnapped, their relationship had already soured for a significant period over an incident involving a broken kettle that Ngwadla failed to replace.

In a poignant victim impact statement read before the court, Xaba detailed the profound and lasting trauma caused by her son's murder. "I trust no one. I have become excessively protective of my two remaining boys. I no longer allow them out of my sight. I forbid them from playing with other children because I live in constant fear that they will not return," she articulated. The case has been adjourned until Thursday for the sentencing proceedings.
