Lagos Task Force Cracks Down on Crime, Arrests 33 Suspects in Raids

In a concerted effort to tackle the rising wave of criminal activities in Lagos, the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit has embarked on a series of coordinated enforcement operations. The task force, led by CSP Adetayo Akerele, recently carried out a dawn operation on Monday, July 27, targeting areas notorious for street urchins, miscreants, and suspected drug peddlers. According to Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, Director of Press and Public Affairs of the Taskforce, the operation was in line with the Lagos State government's THEMES Plus Agenda, which emphasizes a zero-tolerance stance against environmental degradation, drug abuse, and criminality. The task force raided several locations, including Ikate Bus Stop, Marwa Bus Stop, Muri Okunola Park in Victoria Island, Obalende Underbridge, Law School Junction, and other areas along the Lekki-Epe Expressway. These areas had become hotspots for suspected criminal elements, posing significant threats to public safety and environmental order. At the end of the operation, a total of 33 suspects were apprehended, and various exhibits were recovered, including substances suspected to be Tramadol, Indian hemp, Colorado, marijuana, cannabis, as well as dangerous weapons like scissors and cutlasses. The suspects have been arraigned before the appropriate courts under the provisions of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017, and the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018. CSP Adetayo Akerele reiterated the task force's commitment to ridding Lagos of criminal elements, stating, 'Our mandate is clear. We will continue to comb every part of the metropolis to rid Lagos of criminal elements. Anyone whose activities threaten public peace, environmental sanity or the safety of residents will be arrested and made to face the law.' He urged his officers to sustain the momentum of the enforcement operations and intensify efforts to tackle crime across the state.
