The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Dike Chibuike Micheal, a 30-year-old man from Umuolowu, Ejemekuru, Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, in connection with a tragic road accident. The incident, which occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, 2026, directly in front of the Imo State University (IMSU) gate, resulted in one fatality and one injury.

The deceased has been identified as Chibuike Friday, a 19-year-old male hailing from Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. Another individual, Bright Ukwuoma, sustained injuries in the crash.

According to a statement released by DSP Okoye Henry Anipr, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, initial investigations suggest that the suspect, Dike Chibuike Micheal, was driving a Lexus ES 350 saloon car with registration number KWU 766 AE. He was allegedly engaged in an unauthorized street racing activity near the IMSU front gate and driving at excessive speed when his vehicle struck Chibuike Friday, who was attempting to cross the road.

“The impact caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which subsequently struck Bright Ukwuoma, inflicting injuries on him,” DSP Anipr stated. Upon receiving the distress call, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) swiftly dispatched officers to the scene. They successfully apprehended the suspect and rescued him from a hostile crowd.

Both victims were rushed to the hospital, where Chibuike Friday was pronounced dead. Bright Ukwuoma is currently receiving medical treatment. The remains of the deceased have been deposited in the morgue, awaiting preservation and autopsy.

CP Audu Garba Bosso, psc(+), mnips, the Commissioner of Police for Imo State Command, strongly condemned the reckless actions that led to the loss of life. He extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victim a quick recovery. CP Bosso assured the public that justice would be served in this matter.

Furthermore, the Commissioner has directed the State Traffic Department to conduct a thorough investigation to ascertain both the immediate and underlying causes of the accident. He reiterated that the suspect would face prosecution in accordance with the law once the investigation is concluded. CP Bosso also issued a stern warning to motorists against speeding, reckless driving, and other traffic violations, urging all road users to adhere strictly to traffic regulations. He reaffirmed the Command’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property, enforcing the law, and ensuring the safety of all residents across Imo State.
