Chris Brown Admits Guilt in London Nightclub Bottle Attack on Producer

Popular R&B artiste, Chris Brown, has formally admitted his involvement in a violent altercation at a London nightclub, pleading guilty to affray. The incident reportedly involved a music producer being hit with a bottle.

The confession came during a court session at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday, July 23. This relates to an event that took place in February 2023 at the Tape nightclub, situated in Mayfair, Central London. Also facing charges, Brown's vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, similarly entered a guilty plea for affray.

Initially, Brown faced an accusation of attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm with intent, which he denied. However, the prosecution subsequently dropped this specific charge, alongside another count of carrying an offensive weapon—the bottle—in a public area.

Prosecutors detailed that Brown allegedly hit producer Abe Diaw repeatedly with a bottle, then pursued him through the nightclub premises. Additionally, Brown and Akinlolu were accused of punching and kicking Diaw. Surveillance footage reportedly captured the entire assault. Mr. Diaw received medical attention at a hospital for injuries to his head and knees.

The American singer was apprehended in Manchester following his arrival in the UK via private jet for his concert tour. He was subsequently released on bail after depositing a £5 million security bond. His freedom is conditional on surrendering his passport when not travelling for professional engagements.

Justice Tony Baumgartner mandated pre-sentence evaluations for both individuals involved, stating, "I will order pre-sentence reports on each defendants and I keep all options open." Brown and Akinlolu are slated for sentencing on October 26, where the maximum penalty for affray could be three years in prison.

After the court proceedings, Brown was seen smiling while exiting the courthouse, where he autographed items for waiting fans. He later shared on Instagram, "From the cage to the stage!" Reacting to the verdict, Senior Crown Prosecutor Claire Campbell remarked, "This was a vicious and unprovoked attack by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub where Brown used a glass bottle as a weapon to strike the victim’s head twice." She further emphasized, "This kind of violence is entirely unacceptable, and the Crown Prosecution Service will work tirelessly, with the police and partners across the criminal justice system – to pursue cases like this, and prove that no one is above the law."

Detective Constable Zara Ripamonti of the Metropolitan Police described the incident, saying, "This was a disgraceful, unprovoked ass@ult that put a man in hospital." She concluded, "There is no place for serious violence like this in London and I’m pleased these men accepted what they did wasn’t just completely unacceptable – but criminal. This has been a long investigation and we’ve worked with police colleagues in the UK to bring these two men to justice."
