A devastating incident occurred in Portugal when an 18-month-old girl, identified as Sofia, lost her life after being left unattended in a nursery minibus for approximately seven hours. The girl was discovered in a critical condition inside the vehicle in Almada, on the southern bank of the Tagus River, opposite the capital city of Lisbon, at around 4 pm on July 23. Despite the efforts of paramedics to revive her, Sofia was pronounced dead at the scene. According to her grandmother, Sofia was handed over to a worker at around 8 am and was supposed to be taken to her day care centre. However, it appears that the alarm was only raised when her mother went to pick her up in the afternoon and realised she was not there. The minibus was reportedly parked in an avenue called Avenida do Cristo Rei, in front of a different facility from the one Sofia attended. The grandmother expressed her shock and grief, stating, 'We don’t know why my granddaughter was left in a van at this institution, which isn’t hers. The person who had the van killed my granddaughter.' The creche the van belonged to has been identified locally as Colegio Mestre Cuco. At the time the alarm was raised, temperatures in Almada were around 27°C. So far, there have been no reports of any arrests, although Portugal’s Policia Judiciaria police force has been mobilised to take charge of the investigation.
