Oyo school kidnappers face life behind bars in Abuja court ruling

In a landmark ruling, the Federal High Court in Abuja has handed down life imprisonment sentences to three individuals found guilty of participating in the abduction of students and teachers from a school in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The convicts, identified as Abdulrazak Umar, Yunusa Musa, and Shamsudin Sani, pleaded guilty to being members of Darul Salam, a group affiliated with the proscribed terrorist organization Ansaru. They were arraigned before Justice Salim Ibrahim, who found them guilty and sentenced them to life imprisonment on Thursday, July 23, 2026. The first and third defendants, Abdulrazak Umar and Shamsudin Sani, admitted to providing training and instructions to members of their WhatsApp group, titled 'The oneness of Allah is the Foundation of Peace.' Additionally, Abdulrazak Umar pleaded guilty to mining gold in Niger State without lawful authorization. Despite pleading not guilty to other charges, the defendants' guilty pleas to the aforementioned charges were accepted by the court. Prior to the sentencing, the defendants' counsel appealed to the court for leniency, citing that they were first-time offenders who had shown remorse by pleading guilty. The counsel also highlighted that the defendants were married men with children and dependent parents, and urged the court to give them a second chance. However, the prosecution countered that the defendants' actions were inexcusable, particularly given their awareness of the people involved in the kidnapping and their failure to report it to the authorities. The federal government had charged the trio with involvement in the kidnapping of school children and teachers in Oyo State between January and May 2026. Justice Salim Ibrahim ordered that the life sentence should commence from the date of the convicts' arrest.
