Akwa Ibom Police Unmask Imposter, Seize Fake Uniforms and IDs

In a significant breakthrough, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has apprehended an individual suspected of impersonating a police inspector. The arrest was made on Sunday, July 5, 2026, during a routine stop-and-search operation along Atiku Abubakar Way, Uyo. According to DSP Timfon John, the command's Public Relations Officer, the suspect, who hails from Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State and resides in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, was intercepted while riding a Top Way motorcycle without a registration number. Upon identifying himself as a police inspector, the suspect presented a Police Warrant Card bearing the name Inspector Daniel. However, his demeanor and responses raised suspicions among the operatives, prompting a more thorough search. The search yielded another official identity card belonging to the Nigerian Correctional Service, further solidifying the suspicion that the suspect was fraudulently posing as a security personnel. A subsequent search warrant executed at the suspect's residence in Ikot Ekpene led to the recovery of numerous items, including a police beret, police buttons and insignia, inspector rank badges, PMF uniforms, a military camouflage sweater, a lawyer's wig, and two pairs of desert boots. These items are believed to have been used for impersonation and other unlawful activities. The suspect is currently in police custody, undergoing intensive interrogation to determine the source of the recovered items and identify possible accomplices. The police are also investigating whether the suspect is linked to other criminal offenses within or outside the state.
