The Ebonyi State Police Command has taken into custody several of its personnel following accusations of brutalizing a civilian, Mr. Arinze Eze, resulting in a severe injury to one of his eyes. The confrontation reportedly occurred in Ishieke, located within the Ebonyi Local Government Area, as Eze was making his way back to his hometown of Ngbo in Ohaukwu LGA.

Confirming the development in a statement released on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, the command's spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, stated that the officers implicated in the alleged act of brutality have been identified and apprehended. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) further indicated that the detained officers would undergo appropriate disciplinary measures, contingent on the findings of the ongoing investigation.

A portion of the official statement read: "Ebonyi State Police Command has officially identified and detained the officers involved in the recent altercation with a civilian in Ohaukwu LGA." It also added that "CP Hope Urunwa Okafor has ordered the immediate transfer of the officers to Command Headquarters," and "The State CID has commenced a thorough and transparent investigation."

The Command expressed deep regret over the incident, conveying its "deepest sympathies to the victim, who is currently receiving medical treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki." Reaffirming its commitment to justice, the statement concluded by emphasizing: "Ebonyi State Police Command maintains a ZERO-TOLERANCE policy for brutality, indiscipline, or any misconduct that brings the Force into disrepute. Any officer found culpable will face strict disciplinary action. We remain committed to protecting the fundamental rights of all citizens.”
