NIPSS, Kuru Foils Another Gunmen Invasion, One Attacker Neutralised

Security forces stationed at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Plateau State, successfully thwarted an attempted assault by suspected armed individuals on Wednesday night, resulting in the death of one attacker during the ensuing firefight. The incident unfolded around 11 pm, as the gunmen allegedly tried to penetrate the institute’s fortified security boundaries before being driven back by alert personnel.
Confirmation of the occurrence came from the institute itself, through a press release disseminated on Thursday by Dr. Osime Samuel, its Head of Public Affairs. The statement detailed how the intruders exchanged gunfire with security personnel but were compelled to retreat due to a 'swift and coordinated response' from the security forces. It further noted that one attacker was fatally wounded in the confrontation, while others fled the scene, believed to have sustained various injuries.
The official statement from NIPSS explicitly stated: 'The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, wishes to inform the public that another attempt by unidentified armed assailants to breach the Institute’s security perimeter was successfully repelled by security personnel late yesterday night, Wednesday, 1 July 2026.' It continued, confirming that 'The attackers engaged security operatives in a gun duel but were forced to retreat following the swift and coordinated response of the security forces. One of the assailants was neutralised during the encounter, while others were reported to have escaped with varying degrees of injuries.' The institute also expressed satisfaction, reporting that 'there was no breach of the security perimeter. All participants, staff, residents and Institute facilities remain safe and secure.' Additionally, NIPSS highlighted that 'Security agencies have intensified efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspects, while surveillance and other proactive security measures have been further strengthened within and around the Institute.'
NIPSS took the opportunity to reassure all participants, staff members, their families, and the general public that safeguarding lives and property continues to be its foremost concern. It also advised residents to ignore any false information that could potentially incite fear or panic.
This recent confrontation follows closely on the heels of a similar incident just two weeks prior, when alleged gunmen targeted the institute and its adjacent community. That earlier assault resulted in the tragic deaths of three individuals, among them security personnel, which had already led to a significant increase in surveillance and security reinforcements around Nigeria’s premier institution for policy and leadership training.
