NFL Star Calais Campbell's Brother Booked on Murder Charges After Mother's Passing

Ciarre Campbell, the brother of prominent Baltimore Ravens athlete Calais Campbell, has been formally charged with murder following the discovery of their mother's body inside her Atlanta residence. Mrs. Nateal Campbell, 71, was declared deceased within her upscale Buckhead townhouse on Tuesday afternoon after police officers, responding to a welfare check, found her unresponsive, according to reports from WSB-TV.
In a statement shared by NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the family expressed profound grief: “We are devastated to share that the Campbell Family has lost its matriarch, Mrs. Nateal Campbell. While the details of her passing are still being investigated, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father, her beloved Chuck, and in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We ask for privacy at this time so that we may honor her and share in our overwhelming grief privately and as a family.”
Atlanta Police officials stated that concerned relatives had requested officers to the property on the 3500 block of Roswell Rd NW shortly after 12:30 p.m. Upon their arrival, law enforcement learned that a male individual had barricaded himself inside the home. This situation necessitated officers to force entry into the house to detain the person, who was not immediately identified by police.
Subsequently, Ciarre Campbell was identified as the suspect taken into police custody. The 41-year-old, an alumnus of Colorado State's football program and the older sibling of the NFL defensive end, was arrested and processed into Fulton County Jail on Wednesday morning. Jail records reviewed by The Post indicate he faces charges including murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of a felony.
Authorities have so far released only preliminary details regarding the suspected murder. Ciarre Campbell’s defense attorney, Jay Abt, informed WSB-TV that police have secured search warrants for the Buckhead residence, as well as for clothing and DNA samples.
According to Lt. Christopher Butler, officers had previously been called to Nateal Campbell’s home in April concerning a potential mental health issue involving Ciarre Campbell. “A brief look into the history does show some calls back in April dealing with this location, a possible arson incident,” Lt. Butler explained. “There have been some indications of possibly some mental health issues with an individual.” It remains unclear whether Ciarre Campbell was residing with his mother at the time of the alleged incident.
Calais Campbell, a 2008 second-round draft pick from the University of Miami, boasts an impressive NFL career, having been selected for the Pro Bowl six times and ranking third among active NFL players for most sacks. He was honored as the 2025 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year for co-founding the Charles Richard Campbell Foundation alongside his mother and seven siblings.
