Rivers Court Imposes Seven-Year Jail Term for Child Defilement

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has handed down a seven-year prison sentence with hard labour to Jerry Njoku, a 25-year-old man, following his conviction for the defilement of a 10-year-old girl. Delivering her judgment on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, Justice Rita Oguguo further mandated the convict to pay a sum of N5 million to the victim's family, designated for her ongoing care.
Justice Oguguo affirmed that the prosecution had successfully established the case of child defilement against Njoku. She then pronounced the seven-year sentence, to run concurrently, alongside the N5 million monetary compensation for the victim's family. While the defence counsel chose not to comment on the court's decision, the prosecution counsel, Precious Ordu, a chief state counsel with the Rivers State Ministry of Justice, expressed satisfaction with the outcome.
Ordu characterized the judgment as a positive step, emphasizing that it delivers justice not only for the state and the victim but also for the convict, believing it will deter others from contemplating such heinous acts. "Indeed, it’s an offence of defilement, and the court today delivered a judgment that is quite impactful," Ordu informed Punch. He added, "I am confident that the state, the defendant, and the victim have all gained from this judgment."
The chief state counsel elaborated, "The court imposed a seven-year sentence on the defendant, coupled with hard labour, and a N5 million fine payable to the victim's family for the young girl's sustenance." He concluded by stating, "This is a welcome development, ensuring that those who harbour intentions of defiling minors will now be compelled to reconsider their impulses and exercise restraint."
