Harrison Gwamnishu: Fresh Evidence Suggests Enugu Man Innocent in N2m Theft Case

Prominent human rights advocate, Harrison Gwamnishu, has taken up the cause of Ekene Agala, a man who suffered severe beating at the hands of a mob and security personnel following an allegation of N2 million theft. This distressing event, which saw Agala brutalized, took place in Enugu State, correcting earlier social media claims about its location.
A widely circulated video depicting Mr. Agala with a terribly swollen face had previously ignited widespread public outcry across various social media platforms. Within the footage, Agala adamantly maintained his innocence, going as far as to swear by his deceased parents. He challenged those accusing him to present the supposed CCTV evidence they asserted showed him committing the alleged N2 million theft.
On Sunday, June 28, 2026, Gwamnishu shared comparative 'before and after' images of Agala, stating that new information points towards Agala's innocence. He characterized the whole ordeal as a stark illustration against hasty conclusions. Gwamnishu further revealed that the woman who initially brought forth the accusation has now recanted her claim of CCTV footage. Instead, she now alleges that a young child supposedly witnessed Ekene taking the funds.
In a statement, Gwamnishu emphasized the critical lesson from the incident: “What happened to Ekene Agala is a painful reminder of why we must never rush to judgment.” He recounted, "A woman initially accused Ekene of stealing N2 million and claimed there was CCTV footage to prove it. Based on that allegation, estate security and others nearly lynched him through jungle justice." He added that the narrative has since shifted: "Today, the story has changed. The same woman now says there is no CCTV footage and claims it was a little child who allegedly saw Ekene taking the money."
Gwamnishu stressed that this development "raises serious questions and reinforces an important lesson. Never follow the crowd without knowing the facts." He affirmed his commitment to pursuing justice for Agala, stating, "Tomorrow, we will begin the process of ensuring that Ekene Agala gets justice. We thank God he survived the mob attack." He concluded by urging the public: "Let this serve as a reminder to everyone, don't be quick to judge based on viral videos, rumours, or public sentiment. The truth often lies beyond the first story you hear. Emerging facts now point to Ekene's innocence in the allegation against him. We will find out.”
