Impostor Nurse Caught Trying to Abduct Newborn in Onitsha Hospital

Authorities in Anambra State have apprehended a woman at Divine Mercy Hospital in Awada, Onitsha, following allegations that she attempted to steal a newborn baby. The suspect reportedly gained access to the hospital ward dressed in a nurse's uniform, which she had brought in a polythene bag. Hospital staff grew suspicious of her activities and began filming her, leading to her eventual arrest.
Sources indicate that the woman has a history of visiting healthcare facilities with the intent to abduct children. During the incident, a doctor, seen in a yellow striped shirt in a video, confronted the alleged kidnapper, demanding to know her purpose at the hospital. She was unable to provide a coherent explanation, prompting staff to exclaim, "Your cup is full," and others to add, "Child thief."
A new mother whose infant was allegedly targeted recounted her encounter with the suspect. She stated, "She came to ask me if I gave birth to a girl or a boy. I told her boy and she told me congrats. I asked why she asked and she told me she's a nurse, that they just employed her in the hospital. I asked her 'since when?' and told her I've never seen her face in Divine Mercy hospital and she claimed she doesn't do ward rounds."
Furthermore, a voice in the background of the video claimed the suspect was later heard making a phone call outside the hospital, asking the person on the line, "Do you want a boy or a girl." The new mother corroborated this account, confirming she also witnessed the suspect on the phone.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer for Anambra State, has verified the incident, confirming that the suspect is currently in police custody.
