Former Miss Universe Nigeria Chidimma Adetshina Faces Deportation Ruling on August 19

Chidimma Adetshina, the former Miss Universe Nigeria, has expressed her frustration and emotional distress as she awaits the outcome of her deportation case in South Africa. The case, which was heard at the Cape Town Regional Court on July 20, 2026, has been postponed to August 19 for the magistrate's ruling. Adetshina had submitted a statement detailing her efforts to regularize her stay in South Africa, but the prosecution argued that she is an undocumented foreign national and should be detained pending deportation. The state alleged that Adetshina obtained Nigerian passports for herself and her child in Lagos and entered South Africa via Mozambique, and that she still holds a South African passport which she has refused to surrender. However, Adetshina's legal team rejected these allegations, asserting that she was born in South Africa and has no significant ties to Nigeria. They also argued that the department of Home Affairs failed to conduct a fair investigation before invalidating her documents and maintained that she is not a flight risk. Magistrate Reema Khorana encouraged both sides to resolve the matter out of court but reserved judgment on whether Adetshina should be detained pending deportation. In a social media post, Adetshina wrote: 'Exhausted -Yes, Burnt out -Yes, Depressed – Yes, Will I give up, No!' The case has sparked concerns about the treatment of immigrants in South Africa and the complexities of nationality and citizenship.
