The presidential flagbearer of the Nigeria Democratic Party, Peter Obi, has officially commenced his journey towards the 2027 presidential polls. He threw down a gauntlet, daring other aspiring leaders for the 2027 election to present themselves before the Nigerian populace, justify their past actions, and address queries concerning their fitness to govern the nation. Obi conveyed this message during a press conference held at his Onitsha residence on Friday, marking the start of campaigns for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections. He emphasized that no presidential hopeful should seek refuge behind “the high walls of power or rely on proxies and surrogates” throughout the campaign period. He stressed that Nigerians deserve to hear directly from those seeking their mandate, allowing their track records, qualifications, and proposed policies to undergo thorough public examination.

He reiterated, “No candidate should hide behind the high walls of power, send proxies or surrogates to the hustings, and expect Nigerians to entrust them with the leadership of the country.” Obi further asserted, “Every candidate seeking the presidency must have the courage to come before the people, answer their questions, defend their records, and subject their vision to public scrutiny.” He highlighted that “Leadership Requires Presence and Empathy,” explaining that genuine leadership demands physical engagement and compassion. According to him, a presidential candidate cannot effectively lead communities without a deep understanding of their circumstances. He elaborated, “True leadership requires presence and empathy. No one can lead from the front without standing with communities across Nigeria devastated by banditry, criminality, terrorism, and flooding.” He concluded this point by stating, “You cannot truly lead people you are unwilling to visit, listen to, and understand.”

The former governor of Anambra State, who is contesting for the nation's top office alongside his running mate, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, gave assurances that both he and Kwankwaso would personally take their message to citizens across Nigeria. He pledged their commitment to actively listening to Nigerians, comprehending their concerns, and engaging with them openly, affirming that they would not entrust this crucial responsibility to intermediaries.

Obi described the 2027 election as a pivotal moment for Nigerians to evaluate the past performances, concepts, and plans of those aspiring to lead the country, especially in the face of what he termed severe economic and security challenges. His core belief, he stated, was that “Nigeria can work, and Nigeria must work.” He identified several critical issues plaguing the country, including widespread poverty, food insecurity, internal displacement, high unemployment rates, deficient infrastructure, unreliable electricity supply, pervasive insecurity, and the elevated cost of conducting business.

Nevertheless, the presidential candidate expressed confidence that these challenges were surmountable by Nigerians. He posited that the country possesses the necessary human capital, natural resources, market potential, talent, and entrepreneurial spirit to forge a thriving economy. He outlined that an administration under his leadership would pivot Nigeria away from its current consumption-heavy economic model towards one prioritizing production, investment, enterprise, and human-capital development.

“Nigeria cannot import its way to prosperity,” Obi declared. He added, “We will produce more of what we consume, process more of what we produce, and compete more effectively in global markets.” He committed to “prioritise agriculture, manufacturing, technology, construction, energy, creative industries and services, while creating an environment in which businesses could invest, employ workers and expand without unnecessary regulatory and infrastructure constraints.” He further promised “to strengthen agriculture through improved security, irrigation, rural roads, storage facilities, access to finance and markets, while promoting manufacturing and agro-processing.”

Regarding public finances, Obi asserted that every naira expended by the government must serve a clear purpose, and significant public investments should yield quantifiable results. He also highlighted insecurity as a formidable barrier to economic advancement, arguing that no nation can flourish when its citizens are unable to farm, travel, trade, or conduct business securely. He advocated for enhanced intelligence gathering and improved coordination among security agencies, a stronger police force, better border management, increased deployment of technology, and the implementation of lawful community-based systems for early threat detection.

“We will improve basic education, strengthen universities, and expand technical and vocational training,” he stated. He also pledged to enhance maternal and child health, broaden access to essential medicines, and adequately equip healthcare professionals to perform their duties effectively. He noted that Nigeria’s poor health indicators remain a significant hindrance to human-capital development and overall economic productivity.

Obi concluded by stating that his administration would pursue a development approach designed to enable each region of the country to leverage its unique comparative advantages, thereby contributing meaningfully to a productive national economy.
