Paredes Doubts Argentina Future Amidst FIFA Suspension, Messi's Departure

Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes has openly expressed his uncertainty regarding his continued involvement with the national football squad. This apprehension stems from a significant 10-match ban handed down by FIFA.

Paredes received the suspension for his role in a heated altercation with Spanish players following Argentina’s 1-0 loss in the 2026 World Cup final. During the incident, the 32-year-old was seen grabbing Spain defender Eric Garcia by the throat, then tackling Gavi to the ground and seemingly striking the midfielder in the face.

The Boca Juniors player indicated that this disciplinary action has cast a shadow over the prospect of his international career proceeding without disruption. As reported by BBC Sport on Wednesday, Paredes was quoted saying, “It’s going to be difficult for me to stay with the national team.”

He further explained that the departure of football icon Lionel Messi from international duty further complicates his outlook. A clearer version of his statement reads: “Because of the suspension as well as Leo’s decision, it’s going to be difficult for everything to carry on as before.”

Paredes also revealed that while he is yet to confer with coach Lionel Scaloni on the matter, a discussion is planned to finalize his decision.

The 39-year-old Messi recently declared his retirement from the Albiceleste, stating he felt he had “nothing left to give” after dedicating his all to his nation. The legendary forward had captained Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar in 2022, though he was unable to secure another title for the team in what proved to be his ultimate international outing against Spain.
