Arsenal's Arteta Hits 250 Matches, Climbs to Fourth in EPL Win Percentage

Mikel Arteta, the head coach for Arsenal, marked a significant career milestone on Monday by overseeing his 250th match in charge of a single Premier League club. This landmark occasion coincided with a 1-0 away victory against Aston Villa. The Gunners secured the win thanks to a goal from Bukayo Saka in the 59th minute, maintaining their perfect start to the new season with two wins from two games.

According to a report by BBC Sport on Tuesday, Arteta has now joined an exclusive group of top managers who have guided a single EPL club for at least 250 matches. The Spanish tactician, who also previously played for Arsenal, boasts an impressive record of 151 wins, 48 draws, and 51 losses during his tenure, translating to a 60.4 percent win rate.

This places him as the fourth-highest in terms of win percentage among managers with 250 or more games at one EPL club. He trails only Pep Guardiola, former Manchester City manager (70.8%), Sir Alex Ferguson of Manchester United (65.2%), and ex-Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp (62.6%).

Following the final whistle at Villa Park on Monday night, Arsenal's North London faithful serenaded Arteta with chants of his name. Reflecting on reaching this milestone with a victory, Arteta expressed his gratitude, stating, “I’m extremely grateful. It starts to be a big number! So I’m really grateful for all the support, the love that I feel from all of them, and yeah, really great to celebrate with a win.”

The coach also touched upon the team’s performance against Aston Villa, a venue where they suffered a defeat last season despite going on to be crowned EPL champions after 22 years. Describing the recent triumph as a collective effort, Arteta conveyed his immense happiness, adding, “It’s a really tough place to come and win; when we came here last year, we lost with the last kick of the game. I think we still had that in our tummies. I would define it as a squad victory – I think everybody contributed in a really great way. We’ve been wanting that need in the final third to find the openings and to be more clinical and finish more actions. I’m really pleased because that’s exactly what we need. I’m very proud, because these guys won the Europa League again. They have a really good stadium where they can create momentum and shift and change the feelings immediately, and we did it, and I think it’s a big win.”

This result also extended Arsenal’s formidable away record, as they have now won their opening away league fixture in each of the last five seasons. Conversely, the defeat worsened Aston Villa’s challenging start to the campaign, with Unai Emery’s squad yet to register a single shot on target in the EPL this season.
