Andoni Iraola, the newly appointed manager of Liverpool, has openly stated the club's requirement for more wingers as the team adjusts to playing without their star forward, Mohamed Salah. Iraola is set to lead his first Premier League match for the Reds this Sunday against Newcastle, having taken over from the dismissed Arne Slot during the off-season.

The upcoming fixture at St James' Park also marks the beginning of Liverpool's first campaign without Salah since the 2016-17 season. Earlier in August, Salah completed his move to Turkish side Trabzonspor, concluding an illustrious career at Anfield where he netted 257 goals and secured numerous accolades, including the Premier League and Champions League titles.

With Hugo Ekitike sidelined due to injury and uncertainty surrounding Cody Gakpo's future at the club, Iraola finds himself with limited options to support Alexander Isak in attack. While the Merseyside club brought in Victor Munoz this summer and already has Federico Chiesa and promising teenager Rio Ngumoha, the Spanish tactician expressed a preference for bolstering the squad with more players for the flanks.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Iraola explained his transfer strategy: "In terms of what we need, there are certain situations that, for me, are clear, especially on the wing because we do not have enough players able to play in those positions." He further added, "Beyond those positions, I think we have to be open-minded in the market and look at situations that can improve our team. It is not about signing a player because we need someone in a particular position. No. It is about improving the squad. We have very good players already here, so to improve, you need a specific level of player."

The club is also contending with the departures of key players like Ibrahima Konate, who joined Real Madrid, and Andrew Robertson, who moved to Tottenham. Iraola faces the significant task of rebuilding a squad that finished a disappointing fifth in the Premier League last season, just twelve months after clinching the title.

Reflecting on the player exits, Iraola remarked, "We lost a lot in terms of experience, high-level players who have performed so well for so many years here but I think it is also a natural thing in clubs." He expressed confidence in the current crop of players, stating, "I think we have a lot of young players willing to take those minutes and ready to take those leadership roles. Overall, I am very happy with the attitude of the players in the pre-season."

Iraola previously garnered praise for guiding Bournemouth to European qualification last season, showcasing his astute tactical awareness and high-energy playing style. His mandate at Liverpool is to mount a title challenge and restore the entertaining brand of football that was seemingly lost during Slot's challenging second season. Securing his preferred transfer targets before the window closes on September 1 would undoubtedly ease his transition into life on Merseyside.

Addressing the ongoing transfer market, Iraola noted, "You understand how the competition works, that the market is open when you start the season. We have to adapt as coaches to this situation because there is a lot of uncertainty. Not just at Liverpool, but everywhere, because the market is open. But we have to adapt." He concluded by emphasizing his immediate focus: "Honestly, I don’t spend too much time thinking about these things. I know that you will spend a lot of time asking me about the market and this, but I am focused on the game against Newcastle. That is massive for me. You have seen the very good players that we have right now in the building, so we can be competitive from the beginning."
