Liverpool's skipper, Virgil van Dijk, has issued a rallying cry to his teammates, urging them to rectify the "unacceptable" display witnessed during the previous football season. The Reds concluded their Premier League campaign in a disappointing fifth place and failed to secure any silverware, a dismal run that culminated in the dismissal of manager Arne Slot.

A mere year after clinching the English top-flight title, Liverpool experienced defeat in 19 out of 56 competitive fixtures and 12 of their 38 league matches. This league loss tally was just one shy of their combined defeats over the preceding three seasons. Their European and domestic cup aspirations ended prematurely, as they couldn't advance beyond the Champions League and FA Cup quarter-finals, and exited the League Cup in the fourth round. Adding to their woes, manager Slot's relationship with star forward Mohamed Salah reportedly soured, with the Egyptian international alleging he was unfairly blamed for the team's struggles.

The Dutch international defender, Van Dijk, is now pushing his colleagues to wipe away the unpleasant memories of the previous season by achieving a significantly better performance this term. Van Dijk stated, "Last year was unacceptable. This year we have an opportunity to turn that around." He further elaborated on the team's readiness, saying, "We all know how tough that will be but if you’re not up for the challenge, then you’re not at the right place. What I feel at the moment is everyone is up for the challenge. Let’s see how we go about it." Emphasizing their motivation, he added, "I’m really looking forward to this season, and I don’t think we have a point to prove to anyone. We have to show how much we care, how much we want to fight for this badge and also realise how privileged we are to be playing for Liverpool.”

To rejuvenate the squad and reinstate the high-octane football that dwindled under Slot's tenure, former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has been appointed. Since the conclusion of the last season, several key figures have exited Anfield, including Salah, Ibrahima Konate, and Andrew Robertson, with Curtis Jones also reportedly on his way to Inter Milan. In terms of new recruits, Spanish winger Victor Munoz and Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet have joined on permanent transfers, while Barcelona's central defender Ronald Araujo has arrived on a loan agreement.

Following Iraola's pre-season observation that the players possessed sufficient fitness for only 30 minutes of a game, Van Dijk acknowledged the imperative for Liverpool to prevent a recurrence of the injury crisis that hampered them previously. Van Dijk expressed optimism that Iraola can instil greater dynamism and direction into Liverpool's play, a stark contrast to their struggles during Slot's unfortunate second season. He remarked, "If you look at Bournemouth last year, I think they were pretty exciting. I would say if we keep working, keep believing, keep showing our quality, then we can be very excited." The captain also stressed the importance of squad depth and fitness: "We need everyone to be fit. We need a squad which is able to compete on all four fronts, and that’s the only way to try to be successful. Let’s see what the last couple of weeks of the transfer window will bring and then let’s go for it.”
