Football enthusiasts from Nigeria played a crucial role in the extensive digital engagement experienced by SuperSport during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. According to an announcement from the broadcaster, Nigerians constituted 21.2 percent of the participants on the SuperSport Predictor platform.

Following the conclusion of the tournament, SuperSport released figures indicating that Nigerian users ranked second only to South Africans, who made up 29.5 percent of registered users on the Predictor platform as of Tuesday. The World Cup, hosted across the USA, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, culminated in Spain's 1-0 victory over Argentina in the final held in New Jersey.

Nigeria's substantial involvement contributed significantly to SuperSport's broader digital performance, which saw the broadcaster achieve an impressive 19.1 billion social media views and 677 million video views across all territories where the tournament was broadcast. SuperSport highlighted that its digital strategy went beyond conventional live television, incorporating interactive platforms, local language narratives, and content driven by creators to maintain high engagement levels among African fans throughout the competition.

The report detailed the success of the SuperSport Predictor, stating: “The SuperSport Predictor registered 175,615 users, who made 3.81 million predictions during the competition. Nigeria accounted for 21.2 per cent of registered users, second only to South Africa, which contributed 29.5 per cent.” The Predictor also recorded 257,299 game sessions and 160,749 completed challenges, indicating an 83.1 percent completion rate.

Across its various digital channels, SuperSport generated 817 videos for platforms like YouTube and TikTok, accumulating 677 million views, with these two platforms alone contributing 84 percent of the total. This content also garnered 54.4 million engagements and helped build a paid audience of 11.4 million. The overarching #EverythingCanWait campaign independently generated 19.1 billion views across social media platforms. Furthermore, SuperSport’s Pan-African creator programme added 18.1 million views and 8.8 million engagements, with creator content achieving an overall engagement rate of five percent.

SuperSport also reported that its official website, SuperSport.com, attracted 10.1 million visitors during the World Cup period and generated over six million football video views. The platform also registered 417,591 referrals into DStv’s OTT (over-the-top) environment.

“The digital strategy was closely integrated with DStv Stream, whose dedicated FIFA World Cup Hub recorded six million visits, while peak concurrent streams reached 933,000,” the broadcaster further explained. A key aspect of SuperSport’s approach was local relevance, evidenced by the strong positive sentiment reported around its multilingual commentary. Notably, Pidgin commentary generated the highest volume of organic social media discussion regarding its commentators.
