A football match in Phoenix, Arizona, tragically ended in the death of 19-year-old Tumusifu Bazirake, an American teenager who was reportedly trying to protect his brother during a violent brawl. The incident occurred on August 6, around 8 p.m., at Sueno Park, where Bazirake and his brother, Jeanpaul, were playing soccer against a group of unknown individuals.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, the confrontation escalated after the game when the opposing players, angered by their loss, attacked Tumusifu. Jeanpaul recounted the events to WKYC, stating that the rival team initiated the assault because they were upset about conceding goals. "Then (they were) beating us, pushing us, cause we scored on them, and they got mad and all that," Jeanpaul explained.

Jeanpaul further detailed how his brother intervened to shield him when they were both overwhelmed by the attackers. He described the moment an opposing player threw a punch, which he blocked, leading to multiple individuals jumping on him. "Then that’s when my brother jumped in, too," he added. Jeanpaul witnessed his brother being mercilessly beaten on the ground during the roughly 20-minute altercation. "I tried to turn around, then he was on the ground, and they were just stepping on him while he’s on the ground. Stepping, kicking, punching — all that," he told the outlet.

The assailants fled the park, located approximately 10 miles from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, once they realized Bazirake was unresponsive. Phoenix Fire officials found Bazirake unconscious and transported him to a local hospital in an "extremely critical condition." He succumbed to his injuries on August 13, prompting authorities to launch a homicide investigation. His remains have been transferred to the Office of the Medical Examiner, with the official cause of death pending an autopsy. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the police have not publicly identified any suspects or persons of interest.

Bazirake's grieving family shared with WKYC that he had plans to commence his first semester at community college on August 24. His aspiration was to become a firefighter after graduation. His mother, speaking through a translator, conveyed her son's love for education and his desire to pursue a career as a firefighter to "help people."
