Ivory Coast's Yan Diomande Joins Real Madrid in Record African Transfer

Spanish football giants Real Madrid have finalized the acquisition of Ivorian winger Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig. The transfer fee for the 19-year-old could reach a staggering £120 million (€140 million), positioning him among football's most expensive talents ever. Diomande has committed to a seven-year deal with the club, and this fee has the potential to surpass the £115 million (€133.9 million) Real Madrid paid Borussia Dortmund for Jude Bellingham in 2023. Earlier, Paris Saint-Germain was a frontrunner for Diomande's services but pulled out of discussions after their £102.5 million offer was declined this past Sunday, paving the way for Real Madrid to secure the highly sought-after attacker.

If the full £120 million sum is paid, Diomande will ascend to become the fourth most costly player in football history, trailing only Paris Saint-Germain's Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, and Liverpool forward Alexander Isak, who previously made a record transfer from Newcastle United. Furthermore, this move establishes Diomande as the priciest African player ever, eclipsing the £72 million fee Arsenal shelled out to Lille for his compatriot, Nicolas Pepe, in 2019.

Prior to his Madrid move, Diomande was a target for Liverpool, whose initial £69 million bid was turned down in June. The Reds were reportedly seeking a long-term successor for Mohamed Salah, who had transferred to Turkish side Trabzonspor. For Real Madrid, the young Ivorian marks the sixth summer addition under their new head coach, Jose Mourinho, joining a list that includes Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella, and Carlos Espi.

Diomande had a remarkable breakout season in Germany, earning the Bundesliga Young Player of the Season award for 2025-26, having netted 12 goals and registered eight assists in the league. He also participated in all four of Ivory Coast's World Cup fixtures, prior to their exit in the round of 32 at the hands of Norway. His swift ascent in football saw him transition from an academy in the United States, following his departure from Ivory Coast, to Spanish club Leganes in 2025, and then to RB Leipzig later that same year.

Real Madrid's substantial investment in Diomande underscores their ongoing strategy to acquire top-tier young talent poised to develop into future football icons. The Ivorian has garnered significant recognition for his electrifying pace, exceptional dribbling skills, creative playmaking, and overall offensive impact. In his inaugural full season in European football, Diomande impressively tallied 13 goals and 10 assists across all competitions for Leipzig, drawing considerable attention from numerous major European clubs.
