Tragedy Hits Ugandan Football as SC Villa Captain David Owori Loses Life in Suspected Robbery

The Ugandan football community is in mourning following the tragic death of SC Villa captain David Owori, who was fatally attacked near his residence in Kampala. According to eyewitnesses, Owori, a 27-year-old defender and midfielder, was ambushed by a group of suspected robbers in the Makindye area on Tuesday night. The assailants allegedly struck him with paving stones and made off with his belongings before fleeing the scene. Owori was rushed to a nearby medical facility and later transferred to a private hospital in Kampala, where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. SC Villa has since confirmed the death of their captain, describing him as an irreplaceable loss. In a statement, the club said, "We have lost more than a player – we have lost a leader, brother and friend." Asan Kasingye, a spokesperson for SC Villa, revealed that Owori was attacked close to his home, leaving him with life-threatening injuries. The police have launched an investigation into the incident, with Kampala police spokesperson Rachael Kawala stating that officers are working to gather evidence from the scene. "The scene of the incident has been documented and processed to ensure that all relevant evidence is collected and preserved," Kawala said. Owori, affectionately known as "Colgate", was a highly respected figure in Ugandan football, having played for SC Villa and the national team, the Cranes. The Federation of Uganda Football Associations paid tribute to the late player, praising his leadership qualities both on and off the pitch. "David was not just a footballer. He was both a leader and an inspiration to a generation," Fufa said. The Uganda Cranes also expressed their grief, stating that the team had lost a player who embodied the hopes of the nation. Owori's return to SC Villa in 2023 was marked by success, as he helped the club win its 17th Uganda Premier League title in 2024. His contract had been extended until 2027, but his life was tragically cut short. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for stronger action against violent crime in Kampala.
