The European football governing body, UEFA, has convened an emergency meeting with its 55 member associations to discuss the controversial proposal by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) to sell stakes in its major competitions to external investors. This development comes on the heels of FIFA's plan to establish a new commercial subsidiary that will oversee its flagship tournaments, including the men's and women's World Cups and the Club World Cup. According to FIFA, the move is aimed at generating more revenue for global football, with the world governing body hoping to increase global development funding to $10 billion and provide each of its 211 member associations with access to up to $20 million in one-off capital. However, UEFA has expressed strong opposition to the proposal, warning that it could give private investors too much influence over the sport's biggest competitions. The Football Association has also voiced its concerns, stating that it was not consulted before FIFA announced the proposals. UEFA believes that its member associations are crucial to the success of FIFA competitions, given that European nations have dominated recent World Cups, with six of the eight quarter-finalists at this year's tournament coming from Europe, including champions Spain. Critics fear that the proposal could lead to more frequent World Cups and expanded tournaments, adding further pressure to an already congested international football calendar. The dispute marks another chapter in the strained relationship between FIFA and UEFA, following previous disagreements over proposals to stage the World Cup every two years and other controversial decisions surrounding this summer's tournament.
