Tactical timeouts under fire in England's football crackdown

English football might soon witness the trial of a novel regulation designed to deter goalkeepers from feigning injuries to engineer tactical breaks. This proposed amendment seeks to curb instances where custodians halt game momentum by appearing injured, a tactic that presently grants them medical attention and, crucially, provides coaches a window to confer with their squad.

The new stipulation mandates that should a match official permit medical personnel to attend to a goalkeeper on the field, the affected team's manager must designate an outfield player to temporarily exit the pitch for a duration of one minute. Should the manager fail to select a player within a ten-second timeframe, the team captain will automatically be the one to depart.

This proposition enjoys the backing of major English football bodies, including the Football Association, the Premier League, the English Football League, the National League, and the Women's Super League. Nevertheless, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) must first give its nod before this trial can commence. Pending timely approval, the rule might see its inaugural application during the Carabao Cup preliminary-round fixture scheduled for Saturday, featuring Tranmere Rovers against Rochdale.

This initiative stems from increasing disapproval concerning goalkeepers who exploit injury breaks to deliberately slow down matches and facilitate tactical conversations. For instance, last November, Leeds United's manager, Daniel Farke, openly accused Manchester City's custodian, Gianluigi Donnarumma, of leveraging existing regulations during a game held at the Etihad Stadium. Farke asserted that the goalkeeper's halt in play was a clear manoeuvre to secure a tactical edge, stating that although it conformed to the rulebook, he felt it "went against the spirit of fair play" and called upon football authorities "to find a solution."
