Mourinho's Real Madrid Eye Enzo Fernandez in High-Stakes €90M Transfer Play

Real Madrid, under the guidance of manager Jose Mourinho, is reportedly setting its sights on Chelsea's midfielder Enzo Fernandez, a move that could involve a substantial financial commitment. Mourinho is keen to acquire a new midfield linchpin to propel the club back to the pinnacle of European football, following two consecutive seasons without silverware. While other candidates for the No. 6 role have been considered by the Royal Whites, Fernandez has distinguished himself through his exceptional technical prowess, his knack for winning possession, and his invaluable experience as a 2022 World Cup winner with Argentina.
However, securing Fernandez's signature will be a complex task. Chelsea, having invested €121 million to sign him, is expected to demand at least that amount in return. This financial hurdle means Real Madrid would likely need to offload one of their current midfielders to fund the transfer. Initially, reports suggested Real might be pulling out of the race, but the narrative has shifted.
Eduardo Camavinga, by the conclusion of the 2025/26 La Liga season, had seemingly fallen out of favour at Madrid, with Mourinho reportedly informing the Frenchman that he wasn't part of his future plans. Despite Camavinga's reluctance to depart, his sale alone might not generate enough capital to significantly dent the asking price Chelsea and Xabi Alonso's side would set for a player they still highly rate, even though Fernandez and his agent, Javier Pastore, have reportedly made their desire to leave the Blues clear.
The player most likely to be sacrificed by Real Madrid is their current No. 6, Aurelien Tchouameni. Although a highly talented player, Tchouameni, much like his compatriot Camavinga, hasn't consistently displayed the "game-breaking ability" expected of a Real Madrid starter. According to a report by Rodra P from ESPN, as cited by the Madrid Zone, Real Madrid is actively contemplating selling Tchouameni, who they acquired from Monaco for €80 million in 2022. Mirroring Chelsea's stance on Fernandez, Real is reportedly ambitious and aims to secure an even higher fee than what they initially paid for him.
With Chelsea, particularly under Xabi Alonso, showing reciprocal interest in Aurelien Tchouameni, Real Madrid could potentially leverage this to facilitate a deal for Enzo. If Chelsea values Enzo at approximately €150 million, or slightly less, Real Madrid might propose a player-plus-cash deal, offering Tchouameni along with around €50 million to acquire the Argentine. This strategy underscores Real's belief that Enzo is a significantly superior player to Tchouameni. Ultimately, the direction of these ambitious transfer plans appears to hinge on Jose Mourinho's preferences, as club president Florentino Perez has already demonstrated this summer his willingness to back the legendary manager's demands, regardless of previous statements.
