Mbappe Cites Referee Confusion for 2026 World Cup Penalty Error vs. Morocco

French national team captain, Kylian Mbappe, has revealed the reason behind his missed spot-kick against Morocco during the quarter-final stage of the 2026 World Cup. According to the prolific forward, the incident was marred by "confusion," which ultimately affected his concentration.
The crucial moment occurred in the first half when the 27-year-old was fouled inside the box by Morocco's Noussair Mazraoui, presenting France, known as Les Bleus, with an opportunity to take the lead. Following a quick review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the penalty was awarded. However, Mbappe's subsequent attempt was poorly struck and easily saved by Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, keeping the scoreline at a goalless draw.
Despite the initial setback, Mbappe eventually found the back of the net in the 60th minute with a superb curling shot. Six minutes later, Ousmane Dembele added a second goal for France, securing their qualification for the semi-finals of the prestigious tournament.
When questioned about the penalty miss, Mbappe explained his loss of focus. He stated, "I shot the penalty badly, but it was tricky, there was confusion. The referee tells me it’s a penalty, so I got prepared. Then, he comes and tells me it may not be a penalty. I lost my focus, I’ve never been in a situation like this before."
