Mbappé Pins Penalty Miss on Referee Tello's Distraction Claim

Despite his team, France, securing a spot in the 2026 World Cup semi-finals on Thursday, football star Kylian Mbappé expressed lingering frustration over a penalty he failed to convert against Morocco when the match was still goalless. The forward, identified as a Real Madrid player, managed to redeem himself by netting a spectacular goal that put France ahead, with Ousmane Dembélé later adding another to seal their win. Mbappé attributed his penalty miss to the actions of Argentine referee Facundo Tello, claiming the official caused a distraction during the unusually prolonged delay before the spot-kick.
Explaining the sequence of events leading up to the attempt, the French international detailed how the referee's conduct during the review process impacted his concentration. Mbappé stated, “I took the penalty badly, but it was difficult because there was some confusion. Dembélé gave me the ball. Then the referee came over to me, just as I was starting to focus, and told me there was no penalty.” He further elaborated on the mental disruption, adding, “It distracted me. I’ve gone over many scenarios in my mind about how to prepare for a penalty, but this particular situation was something I had never experienced before.”
The striker’s annoyance was clearly visible on the field immediately following his unsuccessful penalty attempt, prompting an instant protest. The extended wait preceding the kick also sparked disapproval from the French technical area.
France’s head coach, Didier Deschamps, likewise weighed in on the occurrence post-match, noting the significant duration of the delay. “It seemed to me that there was a VAR review which the referee confirmed, and then there was another call to check for a possible foul. They spent almost two minutes reviewing the footage. In the end, that uncertainty was the issue. The fact is that it took a very long time, and Kylian was already ready to take the penalty,” Deschamps remarked.
While refraining from offering excuses for his player, Deschamps acknowledged the challenging circumstances Mbappé faced, stating, “I’m not going to make excuses for Kylian, but obviously it was not an easy situation for him.”
