Authorities in Taiwan have successfully dismantled a sophisticated online gambling syndicate that was illegally taking bets on the World Cup, seizing a staggering sum exceeding US$300 million (equivalent to S$388 million). This development was announced by officials on Thursday, July 2.

Despite Taiwan not participating in the global football tournament, the island nation boasts a significant population of enthusiastic football supporters. The operation culminated in a raid conducted on July 1 at a residential property in the southern city of Tainan, according to a statement released by the Tainan City Police Department’s Fourth Precinct.

During the raid, law enforcement officers apprehended eight individuals implicated in the illicit activities. They also confiscated various pieces of evidence, including computers, mobile phones, financial ledgers, and a substantial amount of cash. Further investigations revealed that five of the eight arrested individuals had entered Taiwan from Hong Kong and Macau using tourist visas, specifically for the purpose of running this large-scale World Cup betting enterprise.

The syndicate is alleged to have processed nearly NT$10 billion (S$405 million) in wagers related to World Cup matches. To facilitate their extensive operation, the group had rented a five-storey building for the entire duration of the tournament.
