Yasser Al-Misehal Steps Down as Saudi Football Boss After World Cup Flop

Yasser Al-Misehal, the president of the Saudi Arabia Football Federation, tendered his resignation on Sunday, a direct consequence of the national team's disappointing early elimination from the World Cup tournament.
The Saudi Arabian squad concluded their campaign at the foot of Group H, securing only two points. Their exit came after stalemates against Uruguay and Cape Verde, coupled with a defeat to Spain, which left them unable to advance to the knockout stages.
Taking to social media, Mr. Al-Misehal openly acknowledged the team's performance fell short of expectations. "The national team's failure to qualify for the next round of the World Cup is a result that falls short of all our ambitions," he wrote. He further added, "I bear full responsibility for it, apologising to everyone who hoped to see our team in a better position." Explaining his decision, Al-Misehal stated, "Based on my conviction that responsibility requires providing the opportunity for a new phase, I have decided not to continue until the end of the current term."
During his seven-year tenure, Mr. Al-Misehal played a significant role in securing Saudi Arabia's successful bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup. This marked Saudi Arabia's third consecutive appearance and seventh overall at the global football showpiece. However, their tournament preparations faced a setback with the decision to replace coach Herve Renard with Georgios Donis just under two months prior to the competition's commencement.
