Riot Police Secure Airport for Hong Myung-Bo's Return After World Cup Death Threats

South Korean authorities are implementing extensive security protocols at Incheon International Airport in anticipation of the national football team's return. This heightened alert follows a serious death threat reportedly issued against the team's departing manager, Hong Myung-bo.
Hong Myung-bo recently stepped down from his coaching role after the squad's early elimination from the World Cup group stage. His resignation came amidst strong criticism, including from the country's president, who labeled the coach "incapable" and called for an investigation into the team's disappointing performance. This marks the second time the 57-year-old former captain has overseen an early World Cup exit during his tenure as coach.
Following the team's World Cup departure, reports emerged that Hong Myung-bo became the target of death threats from irate fans. The Daily Mail confirms that the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency has announced the deployment of 160 riot and airport police officers. These officers are tasked with ensuring security for the national team's arrival on Tuesday in Korea's third-largest city, specifically in response to threats against Mr. Hong's life.
According to the Korean news agency Yonhap, an online message was discovered which explicitly stated: "I will take the lead and kill Hong Myung-bo XXX," further adding the intent to "go to Incheon Airport and kill Hong Myung-bo on the day of his return." In addition to the police presence, twenty-five special security guards have also been assigned to the operation.
A statement released by the police indicated their resolve: "We have decided to deploy officers to prevent safety accidents that may occur during the entry process. We will respond strictly to any illegal acts, including the throwing of objects."
