Veteran Bayern Munich goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, has officially announced his second retirement from international football, following Germany's unexpected elimination from the FIFA World Cup 2026. Despite the disappointing outcome for the national squad, the 40-year-old shot-stopper firmly stated that he has no reservations about his decision to reverse his previous retirement to once again represent his country on the global stage.

Neuer's illustrious international career concluded after Germany suffered a painful 4–3 defeat in a penalty shootout against Paraguay during the Round of 32. In a heartfelt statement released after the match, the legendary goalkeeper acknowledged that the team's early exit was intensely painful and fell considerably short of their collective aspirations. However, he expressed complete peace with his choice to make a comeback.

“It has always been an honor! The early exit from the World Cup is extremely disappointing. We clearly fell short of expectations and should have progressed further in this tournament. This ending is very painful,” Neuer conveyed. He further explained his rationale for returning: “I made a conscious decision to play for Germany one more time. Firstly, because wearing the national team jersey has always filled me with deep pride. Secondly, because at 40 years old and with the experience of four World Cup tournaments, I wanted to support the young players both on and off the pitch in the best way possible and help German football.”

Concluding his statement, Neuer reiterated his conviction: “Despite the bitter end, I don’t regret this decision for a second. My disappointment is indescribable, yet I feel immense gratitude. Thank you for your support over all these years and during this tournament.”

The 2014 World Cup champion now departs the international scene with an impressive record of 128 caps, marking the close of a significant chapter in German football history. Moving forward, Neuer will dedicate his competitive efforts entirely to his club duties with Bayern Munich.
