Osubi Airport Security-Passenger Clash Video Triggers FAAN Investigation

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has initiated an inquiry into a widely circulated video depicting a confrontation between an Aviation Security (AVSEC) official and a traveler at Osubi Airport in Delta State. The agency has vowed to discipline any personnel found to have violated its operational guidelines or professional code of conduct. This development was communicated by FAAN's Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, in a statement released on Sunday, following the video's extensive sharing across social media platforms.
Public indignation surged after the video went viral, which reportedly showed a female passenger being harassed during a dispute with airport security staff at Osubi Airport, also known as Alfred Diete-Spiff Airport. The incident sparked widespread reactions online, with numerous users demanding an impartial investigation and better passenger service at Nigerian airports. This event occurs amidst heightened public examination of Nigeria's aviation sector. Recent weeks have seen various aviation-related occurrences, including disagreements concerning airport transportation policy changes and the quality of passenger service, drawing increased attention to customer satisfaction and regulatory oversight within the industry.
FAAN's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Olubunmi Kuku, has consequently ordered an immediate inquiry to ascertain the full details surrounding the occurrence. This incident mirrors a trend of public officials facing scrutiny over viral videos, as seen in recent cases where four police officers faced disciplinary action over a stop-and-search video, another four were arrested in an extortion video, and four more faced arrest after an ethnic bias video caused outrage.
A portion of the official statement read: “The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has taken note of the video circulating on social media regarding an interaction between Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel and a passenger at Osubi Airport. The Managing Director/Chief Executive views the matter with utmost seriousness and has directed an immediate investigation to establish all the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.”
The authority further assured airport users that appropriate disciplinary actions would be implemented should the investigation confirm any misconduct by its staff. “FAAN remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, safety, security and customer service across all its airports,” the statement declared. It added that “The outcome of the investigation will guide any further action that may be considered necessary. Should the investigation establish any breach of FAAN’s operational procedures or professional standards, appropriate administrative and disciplinary measures will be taken in accordance with the Authority’s regulations.”
Reaffirming its dedication to transparency and the welfare of passengers, FAAN stated, “The Authority appreciates the public’s interest and assures all airport users that every complaint is treated with the seriousness it deserves. FAAN remains committed to transparency, accountability and continuous improvement in the delivery of safe, secure and passenger-focused airport services.”
